DPM Gowin: We encourage entrepreneurs to submit projects that will change the image of the Polish economy

PLN 1 bn to support innovation in SMEs and PLN 400 million for large enterprises. The National Centre for Research and Development has announced new calls under the so-called Fast Track.

- A fast procedure based on qualitative criteria for the granting NCBR support is a mechanism that gives Polish entrepreneurs a chance for unprecedented development - says Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Science and Higher Education Jarosław Gowin. – PLN 1.4 bn is the amount of support for domestic companies willing to create innovative solutions. We are not afraid to invest in ambitious projects - on the contrary, we encourage entrepreneurs to submit projects that will change the image of the Polish economy - emphasises DPM Gowin.

The two calls announced by the NCBR form another edition of the highly popular Fast Track programme, implemented under the Measure 1.1.1 "Industrial R&D carried out by enterprises" of the Operational Programme Smart Growth. With its innovative formula – minimal paperwork, call for proposals run in stages and short decision-making time on financing – the programme is very attractive for companies. SMEs may apply for a total of PLN 1 bn, while the funding available to large enterprises totals PLN  400 million.

- Fast Track is a unique support mechanism in Europe. It combines a rapid  project selection process with qualitative criteria which are key to economic development momentum. By introducing additional improvements at the application stage, we take some burden off entrepreneurs and count on their even greater engagement in innovation activities. We are looking for innovative projects, well inscribed into R&D-based development strategies of companies, not those submitted just to receive a grant per se – says NCBR Director Prof. Maciej Chorowski.

In Fast Track calls for SMEs in 2016, entrepreneurs submitted almost 1,000 applications to the tune of more than PLN 5.5 bn. Large companies have in turn submitted 74 applications with the total value of nearly PLN 900 million. In 2016, the NCBR signed with Fast track beneficiaries funding contracts with a total value of nearly PLN 905 million. Thanks to the support under Fast Track, Polish entrepreneurs are working, among others, on a prototype scanner for biomedical applications and supporting research on cancer therapies, novel multi-sensor parking system, innovative technology for producing the next generation of materials for use in displays and thin film photovoltaic cells, or Treg cell proliferation technology for the production of vaccines for the diabetes type 1 treatment on an industrial scale.

The calls announced on 1 February are the first ones in Fast Track in 2017. Both ones - for SMEs and large enterprises alike - will run from 1 March to 30 June 2017. Detailed information on Fast Track is available on the NCBR website.
