Polish-Norwegian contribution to innovation

29-11-2017

The second edition of the EEA and Norway Grants comes to an end. Poland can boast the largest number of grants. A conference was held on 21 November in Warsaw to sum up the Polish-Norwegian Research Programme run by NCBR.

The Polish-Norwegian Research Programme is one of the largest such bilateral programme in Europe. With nearly EUR 71 million in grants, 75 interdisciplinary research projects have been implemented in areas such as climate change, environment protection, gender equality, polar research, social science, as well as carbon capture and storage.

Technological projects have also received funding: 34 female researchers received funds under the Small Grants Scheme.

- Thanks to the funds from the Polish-Norwegian Research Programme we effectively support research conducted in important areas of society. Intensification of international cooperation enables to effective R&D support which will result in innovative projects – says NCBR Director Prof. Maciej Chorowski.

The cooperation of Polish and Norwegian universities and research institutions has allowed to develop a new quality in the bilateral studies conducted. Researchers from both countries have not only been given the opportunity to conduct research simultaneously, but also to share research infrastructure.

Special attention is paid to the scale of the endeavour - 232 research teams from Poland and Norway were involved in the project. Their work resulted in the preparation of over 1,000 international science publications, a third of which was jointly drafted by both parties.

The favourable effects of bilateral cooperation were decisive about its continuation. Negotiations on the 3rd edition of the EEA and Norway Grants have just concluded. Relevant memoranda will be signed by the end of the year. As in previous editions, Poland will remain the largest beneficiary of grants – home-grown projects can count for even more than EUR 800 million.
