Project summary:

Peatlands are highly vulnerable ecosystems with respect to climate change, due to their potential to be major carbon sources to the atmosphere after potential drying in future. In the WETMAN project we will estimate the effect of most expected climate changes (increased temperature and decreased precipitation) on: 1) peatland ecosystem’s carbon exchange 2) stability and allocation of the carbon 3) plant community dependent radiation balance components 4) biodiversity and microbial activity in Sphagnum mosses and in the peat 5) structure of plant communities and primary production 6) optical and biophysical properties of vegetation and their relationship with measured gas fluxes. Manipulation of climate conditions on peatland will be carried out by applying the innovative climate manipulation system. This system will consist of four blocks: control, simulated “warming”, “prolonged drought” during the growing season and combine effect of “warming and drought”. In the warming plots the infrared radiators will be applied to increase the air temperature by 1.0-1.5oC, while the automated retraceable curtains will be used over drought plots to reduce the amount of precipitation by 30-40%. The carbon fluxes (both CO2 and CH4) and optical properties of the plant surface will be measured by the developed automated chamber and optical tram system. In order to investigate the stability and allocation of the “fresh” and “old” carbon assimilated by plants at manipulated microsites a pulse chase labeling experiment with 13C-CO2 will be conducted. Changes in a plant cover structure and its properties will be assessed by remote sensing techniques in order to remotely control the effect of stressed conditions on the peatland ecosystem. The project outputs will increase our understanding of potential climate change impact on peatland ecosystem functioning and support the global estimations of greenhouse gases balances on peatlands exposed to extreme weather conditions.
