The successful linking of research funding organizations in E-Rare-1 and the subsequent exemplary joint funding activities have attested the need of, and the acknowledgment from, the research community for transnational funding of collaborative, multidisciplinary and ambitious projects on rare diseases. It has leveraged funding for rare disease research in countries without specific programmes for rare diseases and thus enabled the participation of researchers in these countries to transnational projects.

The current E-Rare-3 project will extend and strengthen the transnational cooperation on rare disease research funding organizations in the 5-year period of 2015-2019 by building on the experience and results of the previous ERA-Net programmes E-Rare-1 and E-Rare-2. It aims to provide an international model platform for implementing Joint Transnational Calls. The consortium comprises 25 institutions from 17 European, Associated and non-European countries. Its international dimension will be directly translated into close collaboration with IRDiRC and other relevant European and international initiatives.

In 2016, we are happy to celebrate the 10 years of E-Rare.
E-Rare was launched in 2006 and is now in its third phase (E-Rare-3). The major goals of E-Rare are to foster systematic exchange of information and build transnational research programme on rare disease. The E-Rare consortium now gathers 25 funding organizations from 17 European, Associated and non-European countries.
Since 2006, E-Rare has become one of the major contributors to transnational rare diseases research funding. In ten years, the number of countries participating in E-Rare calls increased from 6 to 17.

During those 10 years, 78 million euros have been invested by E-Rare to fund 98 multinational consortia including 449 research groups, 10 million euros of whom were dedicated to young independant investigators. Research funded by E-Rare has a great impact on life patients supporting the understanding of the natural history of disease, the discovery of new causative deases genes or the discovery of innovative therapeutic approaches.

Calls

The ERA-Net E-Rare has successfully implemented ten Joint Transnational Calls for rare disease research projects since 2006. This effort is now continued in the frame of the European Joint Programme on Rare Diseases (EJP RD) that has been established to further help in coordinating the research efforts of European, Associated and non-European countries in the field of rare diseases and implement the objectives of the International Rare Disease Research Consortium (IRDiRC).
